The National Sanctuary Mejia Lakes was established on February 24, 1984, by Supreme Decree No. 015-84-AG. It is situated on the coast of Arequipa, with an extension of 690.6 Has of wetland at the mouth of the Tambo river; it concentrate a big interest as one of the more important stations for migratory birds throughout the Peruvian coast.

In the National Sanctuary Mejia Lakes is possible to find 141 species of birds, of which 84 are residents of the Peruvian coast and 57 are migratory or that can only be found in this area in a certain time of year, in its zeal to escape the harsh winter of other latitudes. Of the migrant bird, 17 reach Mejia from other parts of Peru, 4 from countries in South America and 34 from North America.
